EFFECT OF EMPLOYEE MOTIVATION ON JOB PERFORMANCE IN THE BANKING INDUSTRY:A STUDY OF ZENITH BANK BRANCHES IN IKORODU LAGOS STATE, NIGERIA
Abstract
This study examines the relationship between employee motivation and job performance in the banking industry in Ikorodu, Lagos State, Nigeria. It specifically investigates the influence of a good work environment, the effect of human capital development, and the role of monetary incentives on job performance. A cross-sectional survey design was employed, utilizing structured questionnaires as the primary data collection tool. Using Yamane’s sample size determination formula, 77 questionnaires were administered and successfully retrieved. The sample was selected through purposive and convenience sampling techniques. The study is grounded in established motivational theories to understand how various factors impact employee behavior and performance. Findings indicate that workplace conditions, including facilities and communication systems, significantly affect job performance. Most respondents agreed that a conducive work environment enhances productivity. Although modern office facilities were viewed as beneficial, perceptions varied among employees. Effective communication and teamwork received generally positive responses, while work-life balance was identified as a crucial contributor to job efficiency. Physical elements of the work environment, such as lighting, ventilation, and adequate workspace, also positively influenced employee performance. Furthermore, the study reveals that human capital development—through training programs, career advancement opportunities, and mentorship—plays a vital role in boosting employee motivation and performance. While many respondents acknowledged the availability of professional development initiatives, some expressed neutral or negative views regarding mentorship and educational sponsorships. Correlation analysis confirmed significant relationships between the work environment, human capital development, and job performance, resulting in the rejection of the null hypothesis. The study concludes that fostering a supportive work environment and investing in employee development are key strategies for enhancing job performance in the banking sector.
