Abstract

This study investigated the effect of sodium propionate on cardiac inflammatory markers in high-fat-diet (HFD) streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic male Wistar rats. Thirty-two rats were randomized into four groups: Control, Control + Na Propionate, Diabetic (DM), and DM + Na Propionate. Diabetes was induced via HFD for eight weeks followed by low-dose STZ (30 mg/kg). Results showed that sodium propionate treatment (200 mg/kg) for four weeks significantly improved body and heart weights while reducing feed and water intake. Crucially, it significantly decreased cardiac tissue levels of pro-inflammatory markers TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6, and TGF-β1 compared to the untreated diabetic group. The findings suggest that sodium propionate possesses potent anti-diabetic and anti-inflammatory properties beneficial for cardiac health in diabetes.
