IMPACTS OF UNEMPLOYEEMNENT ON THE MENTAL HEALTH OF YOUTHS IN NIGERIA AN ANALYSIS OF ZAKI LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA
Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study investigates the impacts of unemployment on the mental health of youths in Zaki Local Government Area (LGA), Bauchi State, Nigeria. Utilizing a quantitative research design, data were collected through structured questionnaires administered to a diverse sample of 384 youths. The findings reveal a significant correlation between unemployment and mental health challenges, with respondents reporting higher levels of depression, anxiety, and stress. Key socio-economic, cultural, and environmental factors, such as low income, cultural stigma surrounding mental health, and inadequate living conditions, were identified as major contributors to these mental health issues. Additionally, the study highlights the critical role of evidence-based interventions, including job training programs and mental health support services, in mitigating the adverse effects of unemployment. The results underscore the need for integrated approaches that address both employment and mental health to enhance the well-being of unemployed youths. These findings provide valuable insights for policymakers and stakeholders seeking to develop effective strategies to improve youth mental health and reduce unemployment in the region.
