THE IMPACT OF MULTIPARTY SYSTEM ON POLITICAL DEVELOPMENT IN BAUCHI LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA (2015-2023).
Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study examines the impact of a multi-party system on political development in Bauchi Local Government Area between 2015 and 2023. The research investigates how the proliferation of political parties has influenced democratic participation, governance quality, political awareness, and the overall development of the political system within the local government. The study employed a descriptive survey design and utilized both primary and secondary data. Primary data were collected through structured questionnaires administered to 150 respondents, including local politicians, civil servants, youth leaders, and community members. Secondary data were obtained from books, journals, and official reports. The findings revealed that the multi-party system has significantly contributed to increasing political awareness and enhancing voter participation in Bauchi Local Government. However, challenges such as electoral violence, vote buying, political apathy, and inter-party conflicts persist, undermining the full benefits of multi-party democracy. The study concludes that while the multi-party system has expanded the democratic space and encouraged competition, it has not yet translated into substantial political stability or developmental gains at the local level. The study recommends strengthening internal party democracy, enforcing electoral laws, and improving political education among citizens to ensure that the multi-party system promotes genuine political development. These measures, if effectively implemented, will enhance the democratic culture and foster sustainable political growth in Bauchi Local Government and beyond.
