EFFECTS OF GRADED PERCENTAGE FORMULATED BANANA PEEL (MUSA CAVENDISH) FLOUR DIET ON CREATINE LEVELS IN SERUM OF NORMAL WISTAR ALBINO RATS
Abstract
This research was designed to study the effect of feeding graded percentage formulation of Banana (Musa cavendish) peels flour incorporated into the normal rat chow to Wistar albino rats, ad libitum for a period of 30 days. The animals were sacrificed after the experimental period and blood collected and prepared for analysis to evaluate the urea and creatinine levels in plasma of the experimental animals. After the study, it was observed that the renal function tests exhibited relatively levels of blood urea and creatinine in plasma that were not at variance with that of the animals in the control group at p< 0.05. For blood urea, groups I, II and III (54.11± 0.05, 54.57±0.01 and 55.72±0.11 mg/dl) respectively whereas, blood creatinine showed (25.43± 0.10, 26.01±0.01 and 26.55±0.11 mg/dl) for groups I, II and III respectively. The BCR/BUN ratio did not indicate any significant variation amongst the groups. Results obtained from this research has led to the conclusion that feeding graded percentage formulation of Banana peels flour incorporated into the normal rat chow to Wistar albino rats, ad libitum for a period of 30 days was safe and of nutritional benefit to the experimental animals, whereas the growth rate did not indicate obesity. Thus dried ground Banana peels could be used to fortify diets to alleviate micronutrients malnutrition.
