ANTI-BACTERIAL ACTIVITIES OF PAWPAW LEAF (CARICA PAPAYA)
Abstract
The antivirus activities of pawpaw (Carica papaya L.) leaf extracts using methanol. The extract was tested against some micro-organisms. The micro-organisms used were Escherichia coli (EC), Klebsiella pneumoniae (KP), Staphylococcus aureus (SA), Bacillus species (BS), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PA), Aspergillus species (AS), Enterococcus faecalis (EF) and Candida albicans (CA) respectively. The zone of inhibition for the organisms are as follows: Escherichia coli (EC) with 18mm, Klebsiella pneumoniae (KP) with 20mm, Staphylococcus aureus (SA) with 12mm, Bacillus species (BS) with 10mm, Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PA) with 8mm, while for Aspergillus species (AS) was 6mm, for Enterococcus faecalis (EF) was 14mm and for Candida albicans (CA) was 0.8mm. The highest zone of inhibition was Klebsiella pneumoniae (KP) with 20mm, followed by Escherichia coli (EC) with 18mm, followed by Enterococcus faecalis (EF) with 14mm, followed by Staphylococcus aureus (SA) with 12mm, followed by Bacillus species (BS) with 10mm, followed by Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PA) with 8mm, followed by Aspergillus species (AS) with 6mm, followed by Candida albicans (CA) with 0.8mm as the lowest zone of inhibition which also stand as the resistant and indicating that the extract has little or no antifungal activity against yeast.
