Abstract

This study was conducted to investigate the effects of combining different dietary oil sources [Vegetable oil (VGO), soybean oil (SBO), castor oil (CAO), olive oil (OLO), and coconut oil (CCO)] on growth performance, proximate composition and blood profile of African Catfish, Clarias gariepinus. The experimental diet composed of control (0 ml), VGO + OLO (35 ml), VGO + SBO (35 ml), VGO + CCO (35 ml), VGO + CAO (35 ml), OLO + SBO (35 ml), OLO + CCO (35 ml), OLO + CAO (35 ml), SBO + CCO (35 ml), SBO + CAO (35 ml), CCO + CAO (35 ml), VGO + OLO (35 ml). The fish (4.9±0.02g) were replicated twice with 15 fish per replicate and were fed twice daily at 5% body weight for eight weeks (56 days). Mean weight gain (WG), Percentage weight gain (WG%), Specific Growth rate (SGR), feed conversion ratio (FCR) were measured. Moisture, Crude protein, Packed cell volume (PCV), Hemoglobin (Hb), Red blood cell (RBC), Mean cell hemoglobin concentration (MCHC), Monocytes (MONO), Eosinophils (EOSINO), Total protein (TP), Albumin (ALB), Aspartate aminotransferase (AST), Alkaline phosphatase (ALP) were determined using standard methods. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and anova at P = 0.05. VGO + OLO had the best FCR compared to other treated groups and the control group. Crude protein was highest in the treated groups compared to the control group and value obtained before the experiment. There was significant differences (P < 0.05) among the dietary groups in all the proximate composition parameters analyzed. There was no significant difference (p > 0.05) among hematological parameters analyzed such as PCV, RBC, MCHC, Mono and Eosino among the dietary groups. TP was highest in the treated groups compared to the control group and value obtained before the experiment. The value of Aspartate aminotransferase and alkaline phosphatase was highest in diet containing VGO + CCO and SBO + CCO respectively than the control diet. The result showed that combination of different dietary oil sources improve the Growth, Proximate composition and Blood profiles of clarias gariepinus fingerlings.
