Abstract

This study investigated the academic experiences of first-year and third-year Chemistry Education students at Sa’adu Zungur University, Bauchi. The aim was to identify the challenges students face, compare their academic engagement and explore the support systems available to them. A descriptive survey design was used, combining both quantitative and qualitative methods. A total of 144 students were sampled using stratified random sampling. Data were collected using questionnaires and interviews. The findings showed that first-year students mostly struggle with adjusting to university life, managing time and understanding course content. In contrast, third-year students reported higher stress due to workload, limited laboratory resources and future career concerns. The study also found that both groups lacked adequate academic support and guidance. Based on these findings, the study recommends improved orientation programs for new students, regular academic advising, and better resource provision for science students. The study contributes to understanding student transitions in higher education and suggests ways to support students at different levels of study.
