PROTHROMBIN TIME TEST ON AGERATUM CONZOIDE (BILLYGOAT PLANT)
Abstract
The present study examined the effect of chloroform and ethanol extract of Ageratum conyzoides on PT (extrinsic pathway). At a concentration of 1000mg, the chloroform extract resulted in a PT of 87.27 seconds. This value is notably shorter than the control value of 102.07 seconds, suggesting that the chloroform extract at this concentration accelerates blood clotting. At a concentration of 500mg, the PT extended to 141.80 seconds, which is considerably longer than the control. This indicates that at this intermediate concentration, the chloroform extract delays the clotting process. A further decrease in concentration to 250mg led to an even more prolonged PT of 157.99 seconds, suggesting a more pronounced inhibitory effect on clotting factors. Interestingly, at the lowest concentration of 100mg, the PT decreased to 90.16 seconds, falling below the control value. The PT values for the ethanol extract show a somewhat different pattern. At all concentrations, the PT values are shorter than the control value, indicating an accelerated clotting. Notably, at the highest concentration of 1000mg, the ethanol extract resulted in a PT of 97.98 seconds, which is only slightly shorter compared to the control. The ethanol extract appears to have a milder impact on clotting factors compared to the chloroform extract, with PT values remaining within a moderately shortened range at all concentrations. The clinical implications and safety of these effects also need careful evaluation to determine the potential use of Ageratum conyzoides extracts in the context of blood clotting disorders or related therapeutic applications.
