THE EFFECTIVENESS OF ON-THE-JOB TRAINING (OJT) IN ENHANCING EMPLOYEE DEVELOPMENT AND PRODUCTIVITY IN FEDERAL POLYTECHNIC MUBI
Abstract
Abstract
This study examines the effectiveness of On-the-Job Training (OJT) in enhancing employee development and productivity at Federal Polytechnic Mubi. Recognizing that human capital is the cornerstone of institutional success in the Nigerian tertiary education sector, this research adopted a mixed-methods approach, surveying 150 academic and non-academic staff who participated in structured OJT programs between 2022 and 2024. The findings reveal a statistically significant positive correlation between well-structured OJT initiatives and improvements in technical competence, job satisfaction, and operational efficiency. Specifically, employees who underwent mentorship-based training and rotational assignments demonstrated a 34% higher productivity output compared to those who relied solely on formal educational qualifications (Adewale & Ogunyemi, 2023). The study concludes that while OJT is a critical tool for skill acquisition and institutional resilience, its implementation at the polytechnic is hampered by a lack of standardized evaluation metrics and inadequate funding. The research recommends the institutionalization of a competency-based OJT framework, the establishment of a dedicated Staff Development and Training Unit with modern simulation tools, and the periodic review of training curricula to align with emerging technological advancements in polytechnic education.
