EFFECT OF LIGHT INTENSITY OF INCUBATING WATER ON REPRODUCTIVE PERFORMANCE OF CLARIAS GARIEPINUS
Abstract
This study was conducted at the Hatchery Complex of Fisheries Department, Akwa Ibom State University to investigate the effect of light penetration in the breeding tanks on the reproductive performance of Clarias gariepinus which included percentage fertilization, hatchability, survival of fry and fry production success. A total of six broodstocks (3 male and 3 female) of Clarias gariepinus with average measurements of 63 to 65cm length and 2.2 to 2.3kg body weight and was selected from Akwa Ibom State University Fish Farm for the study. There three female broodstocks each were induced at a single dosage of 0.5ml/kg body weight of fish and allowed at a latency period of 10 hours at 260C before stripping. Three male broodstocks were sacrificed for milt extraction used for fertilization. 3g of fertilized eggs were incubated in each of the 3 breeding tanks fully covered, half covered, without cover and labeled Treatments A, B and C respectively in 3 replicates. Water parameters monitored were: dissolved oxygen, pH and temperature. Analysis revealed that, there was no significant (P>0.05) difference in the % fertilization of incubated eggs among the Treatments. However, a significant (PB>C) with the % hatchability value of 83.33 ± 1.35, 74.00 ± 3.66 and 60.00 ± 5.00 respectively. The % survival of Treatment A was 89.19 ± 4.00 while Treatment C had the least survival value of 53.66 ± 5.50 and was significantly (P
