BACTERIOLOGICAL EVALUATION OF RAIN WATER QUALITY IN CALABAR
Abstract
The =k of microbiological contamination of rainwater especially during collection and
sioszgs bas long been a persistent challenge. This study was caroutr tio aessesds t he
Micoobislogical quality of rainwater. Rainwater samples were aseptically collected from
£ve locations within Calabar. These samples were analysed for total heterotrophic bacterial
{THB The average total heterotrophic bacterial counts were 9.6x10%fu/ml in the samples
from Crmtecs1, 8.2 x10°cf'ml in samples from Ekpoabasi,7.2x10°cfwml in the sample from
Mew zirport. 6.77106cfwml in the from Crutech2 and .6.3x10%fw/ml in the samples from
m2 quarter. The total bacterial counts produced insignificant results in the five samples
mulysed. The highest heterotrophic bacterial count was obtained in rainwater from Crutechl

Cratech? (6 77 10¥cfu/ml) while had the lowest count of 6.3x10%fu/ml. The Microbiological
sharacteristics of the five sample analysed indicated that the organism present in the rain
sszier sample which are Escherichia sp ( 42.9%), Shigella ( 28.6%) and Staphylococcus sp (
28.4%) This results showed Escherichia sp was the highest occurring organism found in
mis, water sample which shows poor hygienic standard of rain water consumption. The
result obtained in this work suggest the proper sanitation of rain water consumption.
