Abstract

This study assesses the role of Traditional Birth Attendants (TBAs) in maternal health service delivery in Ile-Oluji Local Government Area of Ondo State, Nigeria. Despite increased awareness of skilled birth attendance, many women in rural communities continue to rely on TBAs due to accessibility, affordability, and cultural acceptance. A descriptive cross-sectional study design was adopted, involving structured questionnaires administered to women of reproductive age and interviews with TBAs. Findings revealed that TBAs play a significant role in antenatal care, delivery assistance, and postnatal support, but lack adequate training and medical facilities. The study concludes that integrating TBAs into the formal healthcare system through training and supervision can improve maternal health outcomes. Recommendations include policy support, capacity building, and improved collaboration between TBAs
