DEMONSTRATION OF SYNERGISTIC AND ANTAGONISTIC EFFECTS OF DRUGS USING RABBIT ILEUM
Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study examines the effects of acetylcholine, adrenaline, and propranolol on rabbit ileum, focusing on their synergistic and antagonistic interactions. The objective is to understand these drugs' roles in regulating smooth muscle contraction.
The study used isolated rabbit ileum to measure contraction and relaxation responses. Acetylcholine, adrenaline, and propranolol were administered individually and in combination to observe their effects.
Acetylcholine induced significant contraction, while adrenaline caused relaxation. When acetylcholine and adrenaline were combined, they produced a synergistic effect, increasing the contraction significantly. Propranolol, a beta-blocker, antagonized this effect, reducing contraction when administered with adrenaline.
The study highlights important drug interactions between adrenergic and cholinergic systems, which have implications for therapeutic use in smooth muscle-related conditions.
