ANTIMICROBIAL EFFECT OF GARCINIA KOLA (BITTER KOLA) EXTRACT ON SOME SELECTED ORGANISMS FROM MADONNA UNIVERSITY TEACHING HOSPITAL, RIVERS STATE.
Abstract
The study investigated the antimicrobial effect of Garcinia kola (bitter kola) seed extract on Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. Phytochemical analysis revealed the presence of bioactive compounds such as alkaloids, saponins, tannins, and flavonoids which are responsible for antimicrobial activity. The methanol extract showed higher antibacterial activity, especially against S. aureus. Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) ranged between 12.5–25.0 mg/ml, while Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC) ranged between 6.25–12.5 mg/ml. The findings justify the traditional use of the plant and suggest its potential in developing new antimicrobial agents.
