EFFECT OF FISHBONE INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGY ON STUDENTS' ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT IN CHEMISTRY IN CALABAR MUNICIPALITY LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF CROSS RIVER STATE
Abstract
he study investigated the effect of fishbone instructional strategy on students' academic
chievement in chemistry in Calabar Municipal Local Government Area of Cross River
tate, Nigeria. The moderating effect of gender and school ownership/type we're also
westigated. The study adopted a pretest-posttest, an experimental and control group,
uasi-experimental design. The instruments used for data collection we're lesson notes
or-an experimental group and a control group; and chemistry Achievement Test (CAT).
‘he target population was 2800 senior secondary two students offering chemistry in
ublic secondary schools and private secondary schools in the study area. A sample of
30 students (male =67 and female=63) drawn from two schools; one public and one
rivate secondary school within Calabar Municipality Local Government Area (LGA) in
Cross. ‘River State Nigeria was selected using purposive sampling technique. Three
esearch questions and three null hypotheses guided the study. The research questions
vere answered using mean and standard deviation scores while the null hypotheses were
ested at 0.05 level of significance using results from Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA).
t was recommended among others that since fishbone instructional strategy was found to
Ie an - effective strategy for improving students’ academic Achievement in chemistry;
earners “should be encouraged to learn with the new strategy and also realize the
importarice- of learning chemistry, teachers should be discouraged from the continuous
use of conventional teaching methods and be trained on the use of fishbone strategy; and
curriculum planners should be equipped and made more knowledgeable in understanding
the: new, strategy and providing necessary resources for the strategy and it's administration.
suggestions were made for further study.
