Abstract

ABSTRACT Kidney stone disease, medically referred to as urolithiasis, remains a significant health challenge globally, affecting millions of individuals and often leading to recurrent episodes of pain and discomfort. Conventional treatment methods, though effective, are often associated with high costs and adverse side effects. This study focuses on evaluating the antiurolithiatic potential of Bryophyllum pinnatum leaf extract using in-vitro experimental models. The leaves of Bryophyllum pinnatum, a plant widely recognized in traditional medicine, were collected, dried, and extracted using suitable solvents. Phytochemical screening was conducted to identify bioactive compounds responsible for therapeutic effects. The antiurolithiatic activity was assessed through inhibition of calcium oxalate crystallization, aggregation, and growth. Results indicated that the extract exhibited significant inhibitory effects on crystal formation and aggregation, suggesting its potential as a natural remedy for kidney stone prevention and management. The presence of phytochemicals such as flavonoids, saponins, and alkaloids likely contributed to its efficacy. This study supports the traditional use of Bryophyllum pinnatum and highlights its potential as a safer, cost-effective alternative in the management of urolithiasis.
