PRACTICE OF ENTREPRENEURSHIP AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT OF ABIA STATE, NIGERIA (A STUDY OF ABA AND ENVIRONS)
Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study investigates the role of entrepreneurship practices in the economic development of Abia State, with a specific focus on Aba and its surrounding areas. Aba is widely recognized as a commercial hub in southeastern Nigeria, characterized by a vibrant informal sector and a high concentration of small and medium-scale enterprises. The study explores how entrepreneurial activities contribute to job creation, income generation, innovation, and overall economic growth.
Using both primary and secondary data, the research adopts a descriptive survey design. Data were collected through questionnaires, interviews, and observations of business operators in Aba. The findings reveal that entrepreneurship significantly contributes to economic development by reducing unemployment, fostering innovation, and stimulating local production. However, entrepreneurs face several challenges, including inadequate infrastructure, limited access to finance, and inconsistent government policies.
The study concludes that while entrepreneurship remains a key driver of economic growth in Aba, there is a need for improved policy support, infrastructure development, and access to funding. Recommendations are provided to enhance entrepreneurial productivity and sustainability in the region.
