Abstract

ABSTRACT This study investigates the relationship between trade union activities and organizational growth, focusing on the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) in Abia State Polytechnic, Aba. Trade unions play a strategic role in shaping institutional policies, protecting workers’ rights, and enhancing productivity. However, their influence on organizational growth remains a subject of debate. The study adopts a descriptive research design, utilizing both primary and secondary data. Questionnaires were distributed among academic staff, and responses were analyzed using simple percentages and statistical tools. Findings reveal that ASUP significantly contributes to staff welfare, job security, and improved working conditions, which in turn enhance productivity and institutional growth. However, frequent industrial actions and conflicts with management were identified as limiting factors. The study concludes that while trade unions are critical drivers of organizational growth, a balanced relationship between union leadership and institutional management is essential for sustainable development. Recommendations emphasize dialogue, transparency, and strategic collaboration.
