NIGERIA PUBLIC SERVICE AND THE CONCEPT OF E-PAYMENT SYSTEM (A CASE STUDY OF ENUGU ELECTRICITY DISTRIBUTION COMPANY OF NIGERIA, ABA BUSINESS UNIT)
Abstract
ABSTRACT
The rapid advancement of digital technology has significantly transformed financial transactions across the globe, and Nigeria is no exception. This study examines the concept of electronic payment (e-payment) systems within Nigeria’s public service sector, with a specific focus on the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC), Aba Business Unit. The research investigates how the adoption of e-payment systems has influenced service delivery, transparency, accountability, and operational efficiency.
Using a combination of qualitative and quantitative research methods, data were collected through questionnaires, interviews, and secondary sources. The findings reveal that e-payment systems have improved revenue collection, reduced fraud, minimized human errors, and enhanced customer convenience. However, challenges such as poor internet connectivity, low digital literacy, and infrastructural deficits continue to hinder optimal performance.
The study concludes that while e-payment systems hold immense potential for transforming Nigeria’s public service, sustained efforts in infrastructure development, staff training, and public awareness are essential. Recommendations are provided to strengthen the effectiveness and reliability of e-payment platforms.
