ANTIDIABETIC AND ANTIPANCREATIC PROPERTIES OF ETHYL ACETATE FRACTION OF TRIUMFETTA RHOMBOIDEA LEAF
Abstract
Diabetes also known as diabetes mellitus is a group of metabolic disorders, characterized by sustained high blood sugar levels. This study aimed to evaluate the antidiabetic and antipancreatic effect of ethyl acetate fraction of Triumfetta rhomboidea. Plant samples of Triumfetta rhomboidea leaves were freshly collected from a local farm in okitipupa the leaves were washed thoroughly under running water, air-dried then pulverized. Portion of powdered samples of T. rhomboidea soaked using distilled water. Aqueous extract obtained were further fractionate using ethyl acetate solvent. The ethyl acetate fraction was use for biochemical analysis. Enzymes inhibition study was carried out using alpha amylase, alpha glucosidase inhibition and pancreatic lipase assays. The result show that pancreatic lipase were inhibited at low concentration at about 30%, while the highest concentration produced maximum inhibition. The percentage inhibition of α-glucosidase assay demonstrates that at low concentration exhibited the highest inhibitory activity at around 74% and high concentration showed the lowest inhibition at around 58%. The percentage inhibition of α-amylase activity, ranging from approximately 20% at 0.04 mg/ml to over 30% at 0.20 mg/ml. In conclusion, these studies suggest that EAFTR demonstrates inhibitory potential against carbohydrate- and lipid-digesting enzymest. The ethyl acetate fraction of Triumfetta rhomboidea possesses promising antidiabetic properties through multiple enzymatic pathways
