EVALUATION OF ACACIA AND WATERMELON GUM AS CO-POLYMER EXCIPIENTS FOR THE FORMULATION OF SUSTAINED RELEASE METRONIDAZOLE TABLET
Abstract
The shortcomings of conventional oral dosage forms, particularly those with short biological half-lives have given rise to modified formulations. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of acacia and watermelon gum on the release properties of metronidazole tablet. Nine batches of acacia granules was for formulated with a mixture of watermelon gum at different ratios and labelled A1,A2,A3,B1,B2,B3,C1,C2,C3 respectively. The micrometric properties of the granules formed which include;bulk density ranged from 0.24 to 0.31g/mL, tapped density ranged from 0.34 to 0.47g/mL, carr’s index ranged from 17 to 43%, hausner’s ratio ranged from 1.20 to 1.74 and angle of repose ranged from 28.60 to 34.50°
