Abstract

ABSTRACT This study investigates the factors influencing youth preference for agriculture as an enterprise in Bauchi Local Government Area, Nigeria. The purpose is to identify the challenges and opportunities that affect youth participation in agriculture, aiming to inform policy development and intervention programs. A mixed-method research design was employed, incorporating both qualitative and quantitative approaches. Data were collected through surveys of 300 youths and in-depth interviews with 30 participants engaged in agricultural activities. The results indicate significant barriers, including limited access to land (72% reported difficulties), inadequate finance (65% cited lack of funds), negative perceptions of agriculture (80% considered it unattractive), and insufficient training opportunities (58% lack access to training). Findings reveal that socio-economic characteristics, such as education level and income, play a crucial role in shaping youth interests in agricultural enterprises. The conclusion emphasizes the need for targeted interventions to enhance youth engagement in agriculture, thereby contributing to food security and economic growth. Recommendations include increasing access to resources, improving educational programs, and promoting positive narratives about agriculture to attract youth. Keywords: Youth, Agriculture, Participation, Bauchi, Nigeria, Socioeconomic Factors, Policy Development.
