Abstract

This study examines the socio-cultural transformations that occurred in AgukwuNri between 1988 and 2017, during the reign of Eze Nri Obidiegwu Onyesoh. It explores how traditional practices, political institutions, and gender roles were reformed to reflect modern civic ideals while preserving spiritual and cultural heritage. The objectives include documenting socio-cultural practices between 1976and 1988 and analyzing the long-term impact of reforms from 1988 to 2017. Using a qualitative historical methodology, the research draws on oral interviews, archival materials, and secondary sources, analyzed through content analysis. Findings reveal that reform in traditional festivals, marriage customs, taboo systems, and women’s empowerment contributed to a more inclusive, adaptive, and culturally resilient society. Agukwu Nri emerged as a case of successful cultural continuity and innovation, balancing sacred tradition with modern transformation.
