ETHNIC POLITICS AND ITS EFFECT ON POLITICAL PARTICIPATION AND DEVELOPMENT OF NIGERIA, 2015-2023 (A STUDY OF IMO STATE)
Abstract
ABSTRACT
An evaluation and understanding of the political development in Nigeria requires a consideration of the impact of ethnic politics in it. Therefore, the research work is to assess the impact of ethnic politics on the political participation and development of Nigeria, between 2015 and 2023, with Imo State as a study area. Four research questions and four objectives of the study were raised to guide the study. The framework of analysis adopted by this study is the Group theory which holds that in the society there are no effective individual interest, that every group has its interests, that these interests always result in group action and that there is no one group interest that includes everyone in the society. Furthermore, both primary and secondary methods of data collection were employed, and data gathered were quantitatively and qualitatively analysed. The finding of the work among others was that ethnic politics in Nigeria was characterised by an element of common consciousness vis-à-vis other ethnic groups. Finally study recommends that leaders should look beyond ethnic differences and formulate unifying goals which will put ethnic sentiments as second place.
