Abstract

ABSTRACT This study explores the contributions of women to the socio-economic development of Ikom Local Government Area in Cross River State. Women, often underestimated and underrepresented, form the backbone of rural and semi-urban economies through agriculture, petty trading, education, and community leadership. Using a combination of surveys, interviews, and observational methods, the research highlights how women actively drive household income, food security, and social cohesion. Despite their significant roles, they face systemic challenges including limited access to finance, education, land ownership, and decision-making platforms. The findings reveal that empowering women is not a sentimental agenda—it is an economic necessity. The study concludes that sustainable development in Ikom cannot be achieved without deliberate policies that support, protect, and elevate women’s contributions.
