ASSESSING THE ROLE OF REFERENCE SERVICE IN SUPPORTING RESEARCH OUTPUT OF ACADEMIC STAFF IN SA'ADU ZUNGUR UNIVERSITY LIBRARY, BAUCHI
Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study investigates the role of reference services in supporting the research output of academic staff at Sa’adu Zungur University Library, Bauchi. Reference services are vital in providing access to information resources, both in traditional and digital forms, which enhance the quality and productivity of academic research. Despite the availability of these services, challenges such as inadequate resources, limited awareness, poor infrastructure, and insufficient librarian training hinder their effectiveness. The objectives of the study are to identify the types of reference services provided, assess their utilization by academic staff, examine the challenges encountered, and propose strategies for improvement. A descriptive research design will be employed to gather data from academic staff members who interact with the library’s reference services. The findings are expected to provide empirical evidence on the contribution of reference services to research productivity and offer recommendations to strengthen service delivery. This study will not only inform policy and decision-making within Sa’adu Zungur University but also contribute to the broader discourse on the role of academic libraries in advancing research in Nigeria.
