Abstract

COVID-19 also known as corona virus disease 2019 is caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome corona virus 2 (SARS-COV-2) [11]. It is a communicable disease that spreads from person to person through infected air droplets projected during sneezing or coughing, and also when humans have contact with surfaces or substances that contain the virus, and then touch their eyes, nose or mouth with the contaminated hands [12]. In December 2019 in Wuhan, China, the first case of Covid-19 was reported and since then, the disease has continued to spread throughout the world and has caused an on-going global pandemic of COVID-19. On the 20th of January 2020, the World Health Organization declared the Covid-19 outbreak a Public Health Emergency of International Concern and later a pandemic on the 11th of March 2020. As of March 25, 2021, there are more than 125 million confirmed Covid-19 cases, with more than 2.75 million deaths; this makes it one of the deadliest pandemics in history [13]. The disease has a fatality rate of 2.3% and became a pandemic in the majority of countries, requiring persons around the world to attend to updated information about the disease and apply the recommendations to tackle the risk of infection [14]. As there’s no particular treatment of the disease, prevention is the best way to tackle this disease, also with the development of the COVID-19 vaccine which provides acquired immunity against SARS-CoV-2, the virus causing COVID-19, it is safe to say we are very close to eradicating COVID-19.
