Abstract

This study investigated the effect of activity-mediated, brainstorming teaching strategies and students’ academic performance of Basic Science and Technology in Mkpat Enin Local Government Area. Three research questions and three hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. The study adopted a posttest quasi-experimental research design. The population of the study consisted of 1740 Junior Secondary Two (JS 2) students in Mkpat Enin Local Government Area. The sample size of one hundred (107) Basic Science and Technology students in their intact classes was drawn from two (2) randomly selected co-educational public schools in the study area. The instrument for the study was Basic Performance Test on Food and Nutrition (BSTPTFN). The instrument was validated by two lecturers and an expert in Measurement and Evaluation all in the Department of Science Education, Akwa Ibom State University. The reliability of the instrument (BSTPTFN) was determined using Kuder Richardson Reliability formula 20 (KR-20) and the reliability index was found to be 0.82. The data collected were analyzed using mean, standard deviation and independent t-test. The results showed that there is a significant difference in the performance mean scores of Basic Science and Technology students taught the concept of food and nutrition using activity-mediated and brainstorming teaching strategies in favour of the activity-mediated teaching strategy. The results also showed that there is a significant difference in the mean performance scores between male and female Basic Science and Technology students taught the concept of food and nutrition using activity-mediated teaching strategy in favour of the female students. The results further showed that there is no significant difference in the mean performance scores between male and female Basic Science and Technology students when taught the concept of food and nutrition using brainstorming teaching strategy. It was recommended among others that, Government should organize seminars, workshops and conferences frequently so that teachers can update their knowledge of the use of student-centered instructional approaches such as activity-mediated teaching strategy.
