IMPLICATIONS OF CHILD LABOR ON CHILD DEVELOPMENT IN BAUCHI: STUDY OF ALMAJIRCI PHENOMENON IN TIRWUN, BAUCHI LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA
Abstract
This study investigates the implications of child labor on child development with a focus on the Almajiri phenomenon in Tirwun, Bauchi Local Government Area. The Almajiri system, originally intended for Islamic education, has evolved into a socio-economic issue where children are exposed to street begging and exploitative labor. Using a mixed-method approach, data were collected through questionnaires, interviews, and observation. The findings reveal that child labor significantly affects children's physical health, educational attainment, and psychological well-being. Many Almajiri children are deprived of formal education, suffer from malnutrition, and are exposed to abuse and social exclusion. The study concludes that urgent policy interventions, educational reforms, and community awareness are necessary to address the challenges and improve the developmental outcomes of these children.
