THE INFORMAL SECTOR AND EMPLOYMENT GENERATION IN BENUE STATE 2015-2023
Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study examines the impact of the work environment on employee performance at First
Bank of Nigeria PLC. The study focuses on four key objectives: i) assessing the contribution
of performance feedback to employee performance, ii) evaluating the role of job aids in
improving performance, iii) examining the influence of the physical work environment on
employee productivity, and iv) determining the impact of supervisor support on performance.
The findings reveal that while the bank has made strides in creating a supportive work
environment, several areas still require attention to further enhance employee satisfaction and
iv
productivity. Specifically, the physical work environment needs improvement to ensure
comfort, motivation, and efficiency. Additionally, employees expressed concerns about a lack
of personal recognition, which they feel negatively impacts their motivation and engagement.
The research also underscores the importance of job aids, such as tools, resources, and
support systems, in facilitating effective employee performance. When provided adequately,
these resources enable employees to perform their tasks more effectively, thereby
contributing to organizational success. However, the lack of these aids can hinder
performance and limit growth opportunities. Furthermore, while the bank provides rewards
for good performance, the study suggests that the reward system could be more consistent
and equitable to foster employee morale and motivation. Based on these findings, the study
recommends several actions for First Bank's management. These include actively involving
employees in decision-making processes, promoting innovation, and offering ongoing
training and development programs. Additionally, the bank should address dissatisfaction
with monetary benefits, enhance the physical work environment, and ensure merit-based
promotions. By adopting an employee-centered leadership approach, improving supervisoremployee relationships, and fostering a culture of mutual respect, First Bank can significantly
improve employee performance, leading to enhanced organizational growth and success.
