Abstract

ABSTRACT This study investigates the availability and utilization of ICT facilities among upper basic students in selected schools within Bauchi Metropolis. With the increasing importance of ICT in enhancing teaching and learning processes, the research aimed to assess the extent to which ICT facilities are available in upper basic schools and how effectively students are utilizing these resources for academic purposes. A descriptive survey research design was employed. Data were collected using structured questionnaires administered to a sample of upper basic students and ICT-related staff across both public and private schools in the metropolis. The study also included observational checklists to assess the physical presence and functionality of ICT tools such as computers, projectors, internet access, and power supply. Findings revealed that while some schools possess basic ICT infrastructure, the overall availability is limited, particularly in public schools. Utilization of ICT by students was generally low, due to factors such as inadequate access to functional devices, lack of internet connectivity, irregular power supply, and limited ICT integration into classroom teaching. Private schools were found to have relatively better ICT resources and higher usage rates compared to public schools. The study concludes that there is a significant gap between the availability of ICT facilities and their effective utilization in upper basic schools within Bauchi Metropolis. It recommends increased government and stakeholder investment in ICT infrastructure, consistent training for teachers, and the integration of ICT into the curriculum to promote digital literacy among students.
