Abstract

ABSTRACT This study examines the linguistic and cultural significance of Nigerian Pidgin English (NPE) in contemporary Nigerian music. NPE has historically functioned as both a lingua franca and a marker of authenticity across diverse ethnic and social groups. Within the Nigerian context, it bridges communication gaps and represents a language of inclusivity, identity, and creativity. Using a mixed-methods research design with convenience sampling, data were collected from 20 students from the department of English and Literary studies(200L), Sa'adu Zungur University, Gadau, Bauchi State. Three selected Nigerian songs from Afrobeats and Afro-fusion genres were sampled for analysis. These songs were subjected to discourse and stylistic analysis, with emphasis on lexical choices, syntactic patterns, and pragmatic functions. The research is guided by Williams Labov’s theory of language variation and change, which emphasizes the adaptability of language across different communities. The study also situates Nigerian Pidgin within broader sociolinguistic debates about non-standard varieties and their cultural value. The research also reveals that Pidgin English has become a global cultural export. Through Nigerian music, it resonates beyond national borders, giving Afrobeats international recognition. This shows that Pidgin is not a linguistic limitation but an asset of cultural resilience. The study recommends that Nigerian Pidgin be recognized as a legitimate linguistic variety. It should be encouraged in media, creative industries, and cultural institutions for wider acceptance. Educators can also integrate Pidgin in innovative literacy practices to engage learners more effectively. Policymakers are further encouraged to view Pidgin as a tool of unity and cultural expression. In conclusion, Nigerian Pidgin English, especially in music, embodies Nigeria’s linguistic diversity, cultural creativity, and global influence. It is both a unifying medium at home and a cultural symbol abroad.
