EFFECT OF TECHNOLOGY ADOPTION ON OPERATIONAL EFFICIENCY OF COMMERCIAL BANKS IN NIGERIA (A CASE STUDY OF SELECTED BANKS IN OGBOMOSO).
Abstract
In today's rapidly evolving financial landscape, the adoption of technology by commercial banks has become increasingly crucial to maintaining and enhancing operational efficiency. While technology promises increased efficiency, the actual benefits realized by commercial banks arc not always clear-cut. This study aimed to examine the effect of technology adoption on the operational efficiency of selected commercial hanks in Nigeria, specifically focusing on lour major banks: United Bank for Africa (UBA), Guaranty Trust Bank (GTB), Zenith Bank, and Polaris Bank, located in Ogbomosho, Oyo Stale. The research was guided by three specific objectives: to determine the level of technology adoption on service delivery, to identify the factors that enhance technology adoption, and to investigate the problems associated with technology adoption and its impact on operational efficiency.
Primary data was used and well-structured survey designed.. The population of the research covers the staff of selected commercial banks in Ogbomoso metropolis with 165 sample size. This study was analyzed using both descriptive and inferential statistical method. Descriptive statistics involved the use of chart, table and frequencies etc. while the inferenti,1I statistics will be involved the use of regression analysis and ANOVA.
The ANOVA analysis show regression sum of squares is 33.361, indicating a significant contribution from factors such as technology implementation costs, inadequate training, technological failures. data security concerns, and employee resistance. The residual sum of squares is 19.741, highlighting some unexplained variability. The mean square for regression is 6.672, with a low mean square for residuals al 0.459, suggesting a good model fit. The F statistic of 54.534, with a significance level of .000, confirms that the predictors significantly affect the operational efficiency of the hanks under study.
The study concluded that, technology adoption plays a crucial role in enhancing the operational
efficiency of commercial banks in Nigeria. However, it was recommended that, commercial banks should assess and upgrade their technical infrastructure to ensure it suppot1s the implementation of advanced technologies. This includes investing in robust hardware, software, and network capabilities that can facilitate: seamless banking operations.
