Abstract

ABSTRACT This study examines the effects of conflicts between Fulani herdsmen and farmers on national development in Nigeria, a pressing issue that has escalated in recent years. The research aims to identify the underlying causes of these conflicts, assess their socio-economic impacts, and propose actionable solutions for mitigation. A mixed-methods approach was employed, utilizing a comprehensive questionnaire distributed to a diverse sample of respondents across affected regions. the study employed social conflict theory, this study identified resource competition, ethnic and religious differences, and weak institutional frameworks as the main causes of conflicts between Fulani herdsmen and farmers, the findings reveal that competition over land and water resources, historical grievances, and cultural differences are significant drivers of conflict. These factors are compounded by ineffective governance and environmental changes, leading to widespread displacement, loss of livelihoods, and deteriorating access to essential services such as education and healthcare. The socio-economic ramifications of these conflicts threaten not only immediate community stability but also long-term national development. The study recommends the need for the government to strengthen institutional frameworks, promote dialogue between farmers and herdsmen, and provide adequate security measures to prevent conflicts, the study underscores the need for inclusive dialogue and collaborative approaches among stakeholders, including government agencies, community leaders, and the affected populations, to develop sustainable solutions. By addressing the root causes and impacts of these conflicts, stakeholders can work towards fostering peace, stability, and development across Nigeria.
