ASSESSING HEALTH-RELATED QUALITY OF LIFE AND ITS DETERMINANTS AMONG ADULTS WITH PULMONARY TUBERCULOSIS AT UNIVERSITY OF PORT HARCOURT TEACHING HOSPITAL
Abstract
Pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) is a global health concern affecting millions, significantly
impacting the health-related quality of life (HRQOL) of those affected. Understanding the
multidimensional determinants of HRQOL and developing effective strategies to enhance it among
PTB patients are imperative for optimizing their overall well-being and treatment outcomes. This
study aimed to assess HRQOL and its determinants among adults diagnosed with PTB attending
University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital, shedding light on crucial factors influencing wellbeing. Additionally, the study sought to identify strategies to enhance HRQOL and provide
recommendations for comprehensive care approaches. An analytical cross-sectional study with a
longitudinal component was conducted, involving 120 adult PTB patients. Data were collected
using a self-designed questionnaire and the World Health Organization Quality of Life
(WHOQOL) instrument. Descriptive statistics were employed for data analysis, presenting the
results in tables. The study revealed significant variations in HRQOL scores across domains,
emphasizing the substantial impact of PTB on overall well-being. Determinants such as disease
severity, treatment adherence, mental health, social support, and access to healthcare were
identified. Strategies such as comprehensive treatment, mental health support, addressing social
determinants, and community engagement were recognized to enhance HRQOL. The study
underscores the need for a holistic approach to PTB management, encompassing medical,
psychosocial, and environmental dimensions. Integrating these findings into healthcare practices
can significantly contribute to enhancing the HRQOL of PTB patients. Recommendations include
adopting a comprehensive care approach, promoting health education and mental health
integration, strengthening social support, advocating for policies addressing social determinants,
engaging communities, and encouraging further research for an in-depth understanding of HRQOL
in PTB patients. These steps can collectively improve HRQOL and ultimately enhance the wellbeing of PTB patients.
