Abstract

This project work titled “Investigation into ways of improving water supply to Enugu Metropolis” gives details on how challenges of water supply can be resolved. Water is meant to be distributed to the service areas of Enugu and environs. Sources of water to Enugu Metropolis includes: Ajalli-Owa River, Nvene in Enugu South, and Iyoku River in Enugu East Local Government Area etc. The viii findings reveals that the effects of the challenges include loss of revenue, lack of motivation, aging and damaging pipes and low labour productivity among others. The major problems the corporation faces according to our findings are; operational constraints, ageing infrastructure, vandalism, inadequate funding, political interference, inadequate payment of salaries, corrupt practices and increasing population. This research work also discovered that another serious challenge the Enugu State Water Corporation is faced with presently, is the lack of water treatment chemicals such as alum, Hydrogen Tritium Oxide (HTO) and Total Organic Carbon (TOC) etc. The Water Corporation cannot meet the supply of water to the populace. Based on the findings of this research work, some recommendations were made that Government should ensure that the on-going water supply and distribution project is completed without any further delay. The researchers suggested that Enugu State Government should create more water augmentations apart from the existing ones in Enugu Metropolis. There is need for model of Public Private Partnership (PPP) which is advocated and should be adopted to avoid monopoly and should be implemented immediately in Enugu State.
