IMPACT OF NON-GOVERNMENTAL ORGANISATION ON COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT IN NIGERIA
Abstract
This study examines the impact of Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) on community
development in Nigeria, with a focus on Ibadan South-West Local Government Area of Oyo
State. The research investigates the effectiveness of NGO projects, the resource and
management challenges they encounter, the extent of their coordination with local government
authorities, and the level of community involvement in NGO-led initiatives. A total population of
400 individuals, comprising NGO staff and community members, was identified, and a sample
size of 200 respondents was determined using the Taro Yamane formula. Data were collected
through structured questionnaires and supported by secondary sources, while the chi-square
statistical method was employed to test the hypotheses. The findings reveal that NGO projects
have a significant impact on community development outcomes, particularly in the areas of
healthcare, education, and economic empowerment. The study concludes that NGOs play a
crucial role in advancing community development in Ibadan South-West Local Government Area,
but their effectiveness can be enhanced through stronger collaboration with local authorities,
improved community engagement, and systematic monitoring and evaluation.
Recommendations include diversifying funding sources, strengthening staff capacity, promoting
transparency and accountability, and aligning programs with community needs.
