Abstract

Personal hygiene is essential for preventing infections and promoting overall well-being, especially in university settings where communal living and learning occur. Despite its importance, hygiene practices among students are often inconsistent due to varying levels of awareness and access to facilities. This study aimed to assess the attitude and practice of personal hygiene among students of Nile University of Nigeria. A descriptive cross-sectional study design was employed involving 480 undergraduate students selected using a stratified sampling method. Data were collected using a structured, self-administered questionnaire and analyzed using descriptive statistics. The questionnaire covered socio-demographic data, attitudes toward hygiene, and hygiene practices. The majority of respondents were aged 21–25 years (53.1%) and female (57.7%). Mostly were Christians (61.5%) and of Yoruba ethnicity (30.8%). The College of Health Sciences had the highest representation (30.8%). About (69.2%) had received formal hygiene training. Overall, (88.8%) of students had a positive attitude toward personal hygiene, acknowledging its role in infection prevention and professional presentation. Hygiene practices were generally good, with (66.7%) always washing hands with soap and water and (65.4%) bathing at least twice daily. However, only (53.8%) consistently disinfected personal belongings, and (57.9%) always covered their mouth/nose when sneezing or coughing. In concluson Students at Nile University demonstrated a generally positive attitude toward hygiene, though gaps were observed in consistent practice. Improved hygiene infrastructure, broader education efforts, and practical campaigns are recommended to promote uniform adherence to good hygiene practices.
