Abstract

ABSTRACT The risk of cancer is a significant issue in both developed and developing countries, drawing considerable attention from the scientific and medical communities. Minimizing cancer risk is essential when performing medical X-rays. Therefore, regularly evaluating radiological procedures is critical to ensuring that patient radiation doses are kept as low as reasonably achievable. This study aims to assess the radiation doses received by patients during various X-ray diagnostic procedures at selected centers in Federal Medical Center [FMC] Bayelsa State. At the reception the dose rate is 0.220 which is lower than the ICRP Standard. At the dark room it is 0.150 which is good. At the general office it is 0.110 which is also lower. When the X-ray machine is not use is 0.220. Before exposure in viewing room is 0.220. Film viewing room during exposure is 1.230 which is a little higher than the ICRP standard. X-ray machine in use is 6.020 which exceed the icrp standard of 1μSv which is quite high but understandable since the machine is in use. The average dose rate is 1.009 μSv/yr which slightly exceeds the ICRP standard of 0.274μSv/yr which is okay but still needs to be monitored.
