Abstract

The issue of fake news is a major concern at the local and global levels. Dozens of news articles worldwide have reported on the spread of fake news in the political, social, economic and entertainment arenas. This study therefore, assessed the impact of fake news on media credibility in Nigeria by focusing on the residents of Enugu metropolis. The study was anchored on the Uses and Gratifications Theory and the Selectivity Factor Theories. The researcher adopted the survey research method for the study. A sample of 400 was drawn from a population of 1,138,918 using the Taro Yamane statistical tool. The measuring instrument of the study was the questionnaire. The research questions were analysed using simple percentage table while the research hypotheses were tested using the Chi-Square statistical table. The researcher found out that there is a significant relationship between news sources and fake news. Part of the recommendations was that online newspapers should ensure that they employ only qualified and well-trained journalists who can validate and defend whatever story that has their by-line.
