Abstract

A loom is a device used to weave cloth and tapestry. The basic purpose of any loom is to hold the warp threads under tension to facilitate the interweaving of the weft threads. The need for table loom has been a great concern in the Department of Visual Arts. Students in the department often encounter delays in doing their assignments as at when due, hence table loom has been a major problem in the Department of Visual Arts as only few can be found in the Department which makes students queue up while using the ones available. This hinders student’s effort in embroidery making since they have no table looms. The aim of this project is to fabricate a table loom for textile unit in Visual Arts Department. The following objectives were formulated for the study: i) to construct of a table loom for the Department of Visual Arts and Technology; ii) to identify materials and tools required for constructing the table loom; iii) to produce sample woven fabrics with the constructed table loom. The research methodology used in this study is a studio-based research approach. Through the use of the descriptive method, the various stages involved in the design and construction of the loom as well as its mode of operation are described. Findings revealed that, the need for table loom in the Department of Visual Arts cannot be overemphasized because it is an essential equipment for all types of weaving. The study recommends that textile industries should adopt the use of table looms. Also, studies should be carried out on how to maintain the looms.
