Abstract

Water resources are essential for human survival, economic development, and environmental sustainability. However, rapid population growth, urbanization, and poor management practices have placed increasing pressure on available water resources. This study assessed water resource management and its impact on environmental sustainability in urban communities. The objectives of the study were to examine water management practices, identify sources of water pollution, and evaluate the environmental impacts of poor water management. The research adopted a descriptive survey design. Data were collected using structured questionnaires administered to one hundred (100) respondents within the study area. The collected data were analyzed using frequency distribution tables and percentages. The findings revealed that boreholes and wells are the major sources of water supply in the community. The study also identified improper waste disposal, sewage discharge, and agricultural chemicals as major causes of water pollution. Furthermore, the results indicated that poor water management contributes to environmental problems such as water contamination, water scarcity, and loss of aquatic life. The study concludes that effective water resource management is essential for environmental sustainability. It recommends improved water supply infrastructure, proper waste management practices, environmental awareness programs, and strict enforcement of environmental regulations.
