Abstract

ABSTRACT This study investigates the impact of robbery on students residing in Yuli, Bauchi State, with a focus on the academic, psychological, and social consequences of such criminal incidents. Using Marxist theory as a theoretical framework, the research interprets robbery as a symptom of broader socioeconomic inequalities and systemic neglect. A total population of 950 students formed the basis of the study, from which a sample size of 281 was drawn using Taro Yamane’s formula. Data were collected through structured questionnaires and analyzed using descriptive statistical methods. The findings reveal that robbery incidents are frequent and have significant effects on students’ academic performance, emotional well-being, and sense of safety. The study also found that coping mechanisms vary, with some students seeking social support while others experience isolation and anxiety. Despite efforts by the community and university authorities to improve security, many measures remain inadequate. The study recommends increased collaboration between university management, local security agencies, and the student body to implement more effective preventive strategies. This research contributes to the growing body of knowledge on student safety and crime in tertiary institution communities, highlighting the urgent need for practical interventions in crime-prone student residential areas.
