DEVELOPMENT AND EVALUATION OF A SPRING POWERED ELECTRICGENERATOR
Abstract
The spring-powered generator is a type of innovative device that has recently gained significant research attention due to its potential applications in providing sustainable energy solutions. As a renewable energy supply alternative, the spring-powered generator seeks to provide stable and clean electricity, reducing reliance on fossil fuels and mitigating the impacts of climate change. This project aims to fabricate an affordable spring-powered generator for low-power applications, providing a reliable and efficient energy source for homes, offices, and educational institutions. The goal is to enhance the value and application of spring-powered generators in numerous fields, including renewable energy generation and practical demonstration of energy conversion principles. The spring-powered generator utilizes a crank mechanism to energize a set of mechanical springs to reciprocate, thereby, generating rotary motion of the crankshaft to drive an electromagnetic induction coil of 1 kVA to produce electricity. A 29kg flywheel was integrated in the system to stabilize and maintain steady shaft speed. The outcome of the study indicates that the generator converts the mechanical energy stored in the spring into electricity, but only produces a very small amount of energy due to the non- continuous rotation of the generator. This technology, however, holds potential to drive socio-economic development by providing reliable and efficient energy solutions, particularly in off-grid or remote areas, provided that the mechanical limitations hindering continuous rotation are addressed.
