THE SOCIO-ECONOMIC IMPLICATION OF ALCOHOL CONSUMPTION AMONG YOUTH IN KADUNA SOUTH LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF KADUNA STATE
Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study explores the socio-economic implications of alcohol consumption among youths in Kaduna South Local Government Area of Kaduna State. The research was guided by three objectives: to examine the reasons behind youth alcohol consumption, assess its implications on economic productivity, and identify strategies to reduce harmful alcohol use among youths in the area. The Theory of Differential Association served as the theoretical framework, emphasizing how behavior is learned through interaction with peers and the surrounding environment. A cross-sectional research design was adopted, and data were collected from a sample of 130 respondents using structured questionnaires. The study revealed that peer influence, unemployment, family dysfunction, psychological stress, and cultural acceptance are key drivers of alcohol consumption among youths. Additionally, alcohol use was linked to a decline in academic performance, reduced workplace productivity, increased health risks, and weakened social structures. The findings underscore the need for multi-level interventions involving parents, schools, religious/traditional leaders, and community stakeholders. The study recommends awareness campaigns, youth empowerment programs, and stricter enforcement of alcohol regulations to mitigate the harmful effects of alcohol consumption among young people in Kaduna South.
