ANTIMICROBIAL SUSCEPTIBILITY ANALYSIS OF GRAM POSITIVE BACTERIA OBTAINED FROM UTI PATIENTS AT GENERAL HOSPITAL CALABAR
Abstract
This study analyzed the antibiotic susceptibility profile of obtained gram positive bacterial
pathogen from UTI patients. Eleven (11) different samples were analysed. The isolates were
initially differentiated on the basis of cultural and morphological studies after which there were
subjected to biochemical test. The biochemical characterization and identification revealed a
total of eleven (11) Bacteria genera, Staphylococcus faecalis (27.3%), Staphylococcus sp
(36.4%), Staphylococcus pyogenes (18.2%), and Staphylococcus epidermidis (18.2%), the
antibacterial susceptibility testing results revealed that out of the ten (10) antibiotics used
streptomycin (30%), Erythromycin (30%), Chloramphenicol (30%), Amoxil (20%), Ampiclox
(20%), Levofloxacin (20%), Rifampicin (20%), Ciprofloxacin (10%), Gentamycin (10%),
Norfloxacin (10%). Out of the 10 antibiotics used in this study, results obtained showed that
all of them had no effect on the test organism except for rifampicin which was sensitive. This
information can help guide health professionals in choosing appropriate antibiotics for UTI
treatment.
