INFLUENCE OF STUDENTS’ INDUSTRIAL WORK EXPERIENCE SCHEME ON EMPLOYABILITY OF OFFICE TECHNOLOGY AND MANAGEMENT STUDENTS IN ABIA STATE. (A CASE STUDY OF ABIA STATE POLYTECHNIC, ABA)
Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study investigates the influence of the Students’ Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) on the employability of Office Technology and Management (OTM) students in Abia State Polytechnic, Aba. The research aims to determine whether participation in SIWES significantly improves students’ practical skills, workplace readiness, and job opportunities after graduation.
A descriptive survey design was adopted, and data were collected from a sample of OTM students who had participated in SIWES. Questionnaires and interviews were used as primary instruments for gathering information. The findings revealed that SIWES plays a crucial role in bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical experience. Students who actively participated in the scheme demonstrated improved technical competence, communication skills, and adaptability in workplace environments.
The study concludes that SIWES significantly enhances the employability of OTM students, although challenges such as inadequate supervision and limited placement opportunities still exist. Recommendations include strengthening partnerships between institutions and industries, improving monitoring systems, and ensuring better funding of the program.
