Abstract

This study examines the relationship between youth empowerment and sport development in Benue State, Nigeria, using the empowerment theory. Youth empowerment and sport development are essential for the growth and development of any society. In Nigeria, sport development has been recognized as a tool for youth empowerment, with the potential to enhance physical and mental well-being, develop skills and talents, and promote social and economic development. This study used a survey research design, with a sample size of 400 youth participants in sports programs in Benue State. The empowerment theory formed the theoretical framework for the study. The findings revealed that sport development plays a significant role in empowering youth, enhancing their physical and mental well-being, and developing their skills and talents. However, challenges such as inadequate funding, poor infrastructure, and lack of trained coaches hinder the effective implementation of sport development programs in the state. The study concludes that sport development is a veritable tool for youth empowerment in Benue State, Nigeria. However, challenges such as inadequate funding, poor infrastructure, and lack of trained coaches hinder the effective implementation of sport development programs in the state. The study recommends increased investment in sport development infrastructure, training and capacity building for coaches and officials, and the establishment of sustainable funding mechanisms to support youth empowerment through sports in Benue State
