ASSESSMENT OF SUSTAINABIL ITY OF GREEN SPACES IN AJAYI CROWTHER UNIVERSITY, OYO.
Abstract
Green spaces are more than just decorative features on university campuses—they serve as essential elements that support environmental sustainability, student mental health, biodiversity, and overall campus aesthetics. At Ajayi Crowther University, these green areas are visible across the campus, yet questions remain about how well they are being maintained and whether they are being managed with long-term sustainability in mind. This study aims to assess the sustainability of green spaces within the university by examining their current conditions, usage patterns, ecological value, and the policies or practices in place to preserve them. Using a combination of field observations, questionnaires distributed to students and staff, and informal interviews with campus maintenance personnel, the research uncovers both strengths and shortcomings in the management of green areas. The findings reveal that while there is appreciation for the presence of green spaces, there is limited institutional effort toward structured maintenance or sustainable landscaping. Issues such as inconsistent watering, littering, poor soil management, and lack of student involvement in greening initiatives were identified. In addition, although some areas are thriving, others are neglected or underutilized, which raises concerns about the long-term viability of the university’s green infrastructure. The study also notes a disconnect between awareness of environmental values and the practical steps taken to protect these spaces.
Recommendations are offered to help bridge these gaps, including the integration of sustainability policies into campus planning, the introduction of eco-friendly maintenance practices, and the encouragement of active participation from the university community in environmental stewardship. Ultimately, the research emphasizes that for Ajayi Crowther University to maintain and expand its green spaces in a sustainable way, there needs to be a shift from passive appreciation to proactive engagement and institutional commitment.
